I built this for myself first and foremost. I have a problem with budgeting and a very hard time saving. Truly, that's the least of it... I even end up running out of money before my next salary every once in a while.

This is not for lack of income. I'm a well paid software engineer. But I give in to my impulses very easily and I hate tracking my money or just generally organizing things.

Most existent solutions, imho, suck! Too many features, too many things going on. No. That's not what I want. My core problem is sticking with the idea of tracking expenses and budgeting. The easier & smaller the tool is, the better for me.

Other things I didn't care about as a user of personal finance apps?

  1. I don't care about micro transactions. A $3 purchase won't make a dent. I want to just be able to input "I went out and spent ~$X" and be done with it.
  2. I don't care about tracking investments. My problem is a "I have 0 savings problem", that's the first bottleneck to tackle. When I need to manage a portfolio (hopefully in a year from now) I'll figure out a separate tool for that.

What do I care about?

  1. being able to easily fix things when I either forget to track my expenses for a few days or when I just don't care enough to describe what I spend my money on.
  2. knowing when/if I'll run out of money if I plan a trip or other bigger future expense.

With all these in mind I've built Expensio. It's a self-hosted personal finance app that helps you budget, manage your cash flows. It's aimed at people like me, who hate budgeting and love living.

Give it a try! Worst case scenario: you ask me for a refund and I'll give you your money back. All's good.

p.s.: why self-hosted? because privacy is important to me. I don't want to share my income or that I spent $[redacted] on [redacted] last month.

30-day money back guarantee

You'll get access to the full source code of Expensio to deploy wherever you want.

Is it that easy to use?
Yeah! Literally only 3 actions you could take: see how much money you have, add expenses or income and correct your balance when you mess up.
Will I stick to budgeting this time?
It's so easy to use that if you don't, honestly, you're a lost cause.
What if I don't know how to deploy apps?
I've used Docker to make this super easy. If you have a GitHub and a DigitalOcean account, this will take a few clicks! I even made guides.
